Smoothside Al Stone


Al Stone Al’s musical career started when he joined Virgin’s Manor Mobile studio. His first assignment was something of a baptism of fire, involving driving to Moscow to record UB40 at two day’s notice!. After 18 months on the road recording almost every musical genre possible, he joined The Townhouse Studios. During his four years at The Townhouse he worked with the big-name producers of the day including Hugh Padgham, Steve Nye, Gary Langan and Bob Clearmountain. His first project as a freelance engineer was with The Stereo M.C’s and resulted in the album ‘Connected’ - regarded as one of the seminal records of its time.

Many illustrious projects followed, including mixing ’Debut’ and ‘Post’ for Bjork. His first production production was ‘Return of the Space Cowboy’ for Jamiroquai, marking the beginning of a working relationship with Jay Kay which would continue through three albums.

Other notable album credits include mixing the 2001 Mercury nominated Turin Brakes album ‘The Optimist’, Lamb’s Fear of Fours, and Daniel Bedingfield’s ‘Gotta Through This’ and producing Eagle Eye Cherry’s ‘Sub Rosa’.

Recent and current projects include 'Mixing tracks for Alesha, Amp Fiddler, M/s Dynamite and Dear Eskiimo and writing with Rhianna Kenny and Eagle Eye Cherry.
